Orthotics | St. Louis | Arch Supports

Foot orthoses (also known as “orthotics”) are custom foot supports.

Orthtics are designed to fit your feet more efficiently than over-the-counter arch supports and balance the biomechanical inadequacies of your feet and legs. Our orthotics in St. Louis are made from casts and incorporate measurements of your foot and legs and limb length assessment, as well as your exact medical condition.

Custom Orthoses can effectively treat:

  • Metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot)
  • Hallux abductovalgus (bunions)
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel and/or arch pain)
  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction
  • Osteoarthritis of the ankle, knee and hip
  • Pes planus (flat feet)
  • Lumbosacral pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)
  • Diabetic lesions do to vascular or neurologic insufficiency

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are intended to correct an abnormal, or irregular, walking pattern. Orthotics are not truly or solely “arch supports,” although some people in St. Louis use those words to describe them. They perform functions that make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient, by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

Your feet are the foundation of your body and if your foundation is not level it will create problems higher up in the kinematic chain; for example, ankles, knees, hip and low back pain. The biggest problem we see in our office with St. Louis orthotics is the way that patients casts are made. If an orthotic cast is made in a weight bearing position the person making the cast is casting the deformity. In other words if a patient has fallen arches which cause foot, ankle and /or knee pain and a Dr. makes orthotic casts by having the patient step into a piece of foam to make an impression of the foot to build orthotics to, then that Dr. is casting the fallen arches and will build orthotics that don’t support the arch properly.

For best results orthotic casts should be done non-weight bearing with the foot being held in a neutral position to correct any abnormalities or misalignment in the foot. We build a non weight bearing cast with the foot held in a neutral position. These casts are then sent off to a lab where plaster is poured into the casts and an exact replica of the patients feet are made and the orthotic is built to the patients foot to correct all deformities. These are the highest quality orthotics or arch supports in St Louis that you can find.
